Total artificial heart (TAH) – 70cc. This is the first in the world and the only commercially available total heart substitute. This system of 70 cm3 is intended to be used as a temporary heart substitute in patients with an end-stage biventricular heart failure, who are waiting for a donor heart, or in those who are not eligible for heart transplantation.
The device replaces patient’s heart permanently or till donor heart is found. This artificial heart ensures fast and safe blood flow for recovery of vital organs and, consequently, for and easier transplantation of a donor heart.
An artificial heart is used by over 1,900 patients (89% are males and 11% are females), whose age is from 9 to 80 years. This device has contributed to prolonging of patients’ lives by 695 years.
